Wine is made from grapes. Everyone knows that wine is either red or white in color. Yet, few people know the difference between the two. You may assume that red wine is made from red grapes and white wine is made from white grapes. That is a fair assumption to make, most people think the same thing. The truth is the color of the grapes used does not matter. Virtually all juice from any grape comes out white. The color comes from the process in which they are made.
When white wine is made, the grape skins are removed before fermentation, leaving a white-colored wine. The skins of the grapes are typically white, but red grapes can be used too. The removal of the skin prevents the red coloring of the skin from seeping into the white wine. For red wine, the skins are left in during the fermentation process, allowing the color from the skins to seep into the wine, altering its color.
